IAPP Canada 2019

BLG is proud to be a platinum sponsor of the IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium 2019 taking place May 22-24 at the adjoining Metro Toronto Convention Centre (North Building) and InterContinental Hotel. Members of our Privacy and Data Protection Group and Cybersecurity Law Group will be speaking throughout the conference :

1. Dealing with Regulators

I will be presenting on Wednesday May 22,  2 – 3 p.m. – Dealing with Regulators with the following panelists:

Chantal Bernier, National Practice Leader, Privacy and Cybersecurity, Dentons
Christopher Berzins, Senior Legal Counsel, Ontario Securities Commission
Eloïse Gratton, Partner, National Co-leader, Privacy and Data Protection, Borden Ladner Gervais
Amanda Maltby, Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer, Canada Post

Companies are awash in personal information and have more opportunities to use it for good than ever before. At the same time, they bear growing fiduciary duties to be good data stewards, and regulators are increasingly taking action when companies fail in their responsibilities. This panel will discuss how attorneys can help their clients proactively, and after misconduct, to work constructively with regulators in the best interests of companies and their customers.

2. Privacy Hot Business Risks

I will be moderating a panel on Thursday May 23,  2:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. (Room 104D, Convention Centre) on Privacy Hot Business Risks. Panelists include:

Moderator: Eloïse GrattonPartner and National Co-Leader, Privacy and Data Protection, Borden Ladner Gervais

Elisa Henry, CIPP/E, Partner, Privacy and Data Protection, Borden Ladner Gervais

Vance Lockton, CIPP/C, CIPM, Manager, Digital Governance, Waterfront Toronto

This session will address privacy risks from three sources that all businesses have to consider in 2019: inappropriate data practices, global legal trends; and emerging technologies. Evaluating data practices includes effective benchmarking and assessing new business practices and customer expectations to avoid the “creep” factor. Global trends affecting Canadian businesses include the extraterritoriality of the GDPR, copycat GDPR laws, and recent derivate shareholder lawsuits following security incidents in the U.S. The emerging technologies discussion will include smart digital billboards, smart cities, 5G, and cross-device and cross-channel advertising and targeting.

What you’ll take away:

  • Understanding how to properly assess consumers’ expectation and sentiment, whether a business practice falls under a “no-go zone” and how to conduct effective benchmarking
  • Learning about the current global trends affecting Canadian businesses as well as practical tips for managing and mitigating such risks
  • Better managing the risks and privacy concerns with emerging technologies

I hope to see you there!
